Bearded, Older Cyclops Cosplay

31 days to go before Dragon Con, and I’m searching high and low for beard-friendly cosplays.

It’s that time of the year where I start pulling together cosplay ideas for Dragon Con. It’s hard to find bearded Marvel characters. I know, I should let the cosplay dictate the style. I just really don’t want to shave this spectacular beard I’ve been working on for a few years now.

I loved the recent “Age of Revelation” storyline in the X books. When I read it, I thought then, “Oh, I could do bearded, older Cyclops.” The costume is pretty straight forward too, which would be helpful since I’ve only got a month left before the con.

The look of this version of Cyclops seems like a fun character to play around with.

It seems settled then. "Age of Revelation" Cyclops it is! Now to get with putting together the costume.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day nearly overtakes Avengers: Endgame

The latest Spider-Man film did so well opening weekend it nearly beat the box office performance of Avengers: Endgame.

The movie scored a head-spinning $355 million from 4,487 North American screens to land as the second-biggest domestic launch ever. Analysts had been holding their collective breath all weekend in a photo finish between Spidey and Avengers: Endgame, as the latter’s $357.1 million opening from April 2019 ultimately hung on to retain its title as the No. 1 all-time domestic opening frame.

This is huge news. I’m sure it will add fuel to the fire of debate around superhero movie fatigue.

As for why, I like this included analysis:

“To be truly honest, it feels fantastic,” Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman tells The Hollywood Reporter. As for what worked, he says, “You’ve just got to make a really, really great film. Now, there are other more mechanical factors. There hasn’t been one in five years, so scarcity has value. The audience is very, very connected with this character. It’s a very relatable story. No matter how old or young you are, everybody wants connection in the world. Everybody needs friends — and that’s what the movie is about.”

I find myself nodding along with “make a really, really great film.” I saw it yesterday and can confirm. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is indeed a great film. My full review is coming soon.

Let the X-Men Casting Officially Begin

Deadline has the scope as reported by Justin Kroll in ‘X-Men’: Samara Weaving Lands Role Of Emma Frost In Upcoming Marvel Studios Pic.

Marvel Studios seems to be getting closer to forming its team of Mutants. Sources tell Deadline that Samara Weaving is the choice to play Emma Frost in the upcoming X-Men movie.

I don’t recognize Weaving. The only thing I’ve seen her in is the Bill and Ted reboot film. That film itself is not that memorable for me, but that’s no shame for her. Apparently, it’s been a good year so far for the actor.

In March, she led Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, the sequel to the 2019 hit horror-comedy Ready or Not, which saw her step back into the role of fierce protagonist Grace MacCaullay. The sequel achieved an audience approval rating of 90%, a rare feat for a horror/thriller genre film, and grossed three times its production budget within a single day of its May 5 digital release, climbing to the No. 1 spot on Hulu and ranking high globally on Disney+.

I feel like I should go check out this movie and sequel. Sometimes I like horror, sometimes not. All the same, this is super interesting news.

Hmmmmm, I wonder why we’re hearing casting news for X-Men now?

Wonder Man Series No More

Joe Otterson writing at Variety reports: ‘Wonder Man’ Not Returning for Season 2 at Disney+ (Apple News+ link).

"Wonder Man" has been canceled at Disney+, Variety has learned exclusively.

The news comes despite the fact that Disney announced a Season 2 renewal for the show back in March, roughly two months after it debuted. According to sources, a writers' room for Season 2 was never opened and the show's writers have been released to pursue other projects.

I loved this show and am sad to read the news today. The series was a lot of fun and had a lot of heart. It also was an original version of a known character’s origin story. We haven’t gotten much of those in the MCU. Are there any? I can’t think of one. Most of the stories are pretty faithful translations of the hero’s comic origins.

All the same, it’s not that surprising to me. As Otterson notes:

The renewal for "Wonder Man" was an anomaly for Marvel, as virtually all of the live-action series they have launched on Disney+ have been single seasons.

Let’s wait and see where Wonder Man turns up next. I hope he doesn’t suffer the same fate as Oscar Isaac’s Moon Knight.

The kind of Marvel fan site you always wanted

Check, check. Is this thing on? Good. OK folks, here we go.

I’m launching a web site—the very one now in your hands or on your laptop screen. It’s going to be devoted to all things Marvel. Marvel Comics. Marvel Studios. All the movies and TV shows: past, present, and coming soon. Marvel games, and I mean that in the most expansive sense. From video games to mobile, from board games to even the relatively new TTRPG, the Marvel Multiverse Role-Playing Game.

While the site will be aimed at the breadth of the Marvel fan experience, it will not aim to be an exhaustive Marvel source. I’m just one person, one fan. Even if I’m writing furiously about the thing I love most, there’s just no way I can provide the kind of coverage some of the click bait fandom sites do. There are only so many hours in the day, and for now, this is a passion-driven project.

That means there probably won’t be breaking news here. I’ll likely be slower to get something posted than fellow fandom sites. I will promise you this, though—I will spend time on what I post and I will respect your time. I’ll think deeply about what I’m writing. I’ll have an opinion and a point of view, and if I post it here, it will be because I think you will find it interesting. There won’t be ugly pop-ups or large display ads or AI-generated slop. I’ll write everything myself. I’ll care deeply about every aspect, every corner, of this site.

I’ve been a Marvel fan for as long as I can remember. The first comic I read was Uncanny X-Men 137. I found it in a convenience store while my mom was buying cigarettes. I carried that comic with me everywhere, until the cover literally wore off. Yes, I read the original when comics were still sold in gas stations and drug stores. I am that many years old.

So I’ve been around Marvel for a while now. That’s the perspective and breadth of experience I hope to bring to this site. This will be a place for discerning fans who care about the history, not just the latest movie gossip. Though if that gossip is interesting enough, I’ll probably write about it, too. There really aren’t limits to what I’ll cover. I’ll write for you, the Marvel fan, creating the kind of site I would want to read myself, the kind of site that you, too, have always wanted.
